Broadcaster Walt Bodine, 92, died peacefully in the early morning hours of March 24, 2013, in the city he loved and served.
Born in Kansas City in 1920, Walt was the only child of Walton Martin Bodine and Mary
Gilmore Bodine. His media career spanned 70 years from 1940 until his
retirement in April last year.
Plans for a memorial service and celebration of Walt's life will be announced here later this week.

A treasure of our city is gone and I'm sad. Walt enjoyed a hot fudge sundae from my store, Foo's every now and again. He was always very kind to me. RIP

Walt, I am lucky to have had you as a mentor (while in college), a colleague (while working at KCUR), and a friend (all along). You also gave me the opportunity to "teach" your class at UMKC, and introduced me to Dixon's Chili.

In the 60's WHB was the soundtrack of my youth. During the day it was Johhny Dolan and Phil Jay. But at bedtime I remember lying in bed with my transistor radio listening to your dad on "Night Beat".
For me, he is as much a fabric of Kansas City and my youth as Tory Southwick and Whizzo the Clown.

Walt would always be a gracious host when he'd come home from work and his son's rock and roll band would be practicing in the den. I was in that band. I remember.
